YEL Division 2
Someone once said that "Football's a funny old game" and so it proved to be this weekend.
Last weeks ill-disciplined performance by Hucknall Sports saw them go down 3-1 to Cotgrave the then 7th placed team in the League. In the days leading up to this Saturday's game no fewer than three boys became unavailable for a match against run away leaders Hyson Green leaving Sports with only 12 players. Unbeaten in all competitions and scoring goals for fun Hyson Green are Champions elect even before the Christmas break is upon us. Though Hucknall were bolstered by the return to the team of Ryan Towle, they knew that this was going to be the toughest test of the season so far.Hyson Green's late arrival at Goosedale Sports Complex saw the kick-off delayed until 2:45pm, a full 30 mins later than scheduled. But Sports supporters concern that their team might have grown cold waiting around for the opposition to arrive were quickly dispelled as Hucknall got off to a terrific start by playing a wonderfully composed style of football.
Possession was retained, passes were measured, chances were plentiful and the game looked easy. Hyson Green were chasing shadows and looked visibly shocked at Sports classy style of football. Hucknall pressed forward and strike-partners Jacob Barlow and Oliver Bowley carried out their orders to the letter and never let the Hyson Green defenders settle on the ball.
They were like terriers and snapped away at everything and anything. Shots from Towle and Charlie Blatherwick were fumbled by Hyson Green's Keeper as he struggled with the setting sun in his eyes. Just as Sports Management team were wondering if all the teams good play would be rewarded Bowley's persistence saw his shot deflected in to put Hucknall into the lead.
Sports grew in confidence and if anything the play got better. On came Dante Diriso for the exhausted Bowley and he got straight into the action with some great efforts on goal . One particular Diriso header at the far post from Towle's cross went agonisingly close. Then Diriso turned provider and his corner glanced off of the top of the cross-bar from Towle's bullet-header.
Sports were running the game and Barlow looked to have extended Hucknall's lead but his fantastic dribble and shot bounced back off of the inside of the post and was cleared off the goal line with a desperate hoof by the relieved Hyson Green defenders.
Half time: Hucknall Sports 1 Hyson Green 0
In an attempt to get back into the game the opposition changed their formation and played with a stronger front line in the second half but Sports defence were up for the challenge and centre-backs James Stenson and Joe Newton were outstanding. Ellis Evans, recently converted left-back, and the ever-reliable Dylan Smith stopped anything from getting around the back of Sports defence and had the presence of mind to bring the ball forward rather than simply being content to clear their lines with a 'boot' up field.
Sports midfield were running themselves into the ground to close down everything and as Hyson Green looked to get back on level terms a great pass found Bowley in space. He cleverly held up play long enough for the midfielders to join him and Owen Everton released Jacob Barlow on the left wing. Barlow skinned his marker and coolly smashed the ball across the advancing keeper into the far corner. This was no more than Sports deserved for some truly great play.Hyson Green did manage to pull back a consolation goal, but that was all it proved to be as the Sports backline and Keeper Kal Orton were in no mood to let this game slip.
Full time: Hucknall Sports 2 Hyson Green 1
This win was thoroughly deserved by Sports and was a tribute to team play. Every boy can be proud of themselves for a truly heroic performance.Special mentions must go to the front three of Bowley, Diriso and Barlow who were magnificent. In the midfield Owen Everton and Captain Fantastic Mitch Davies were awesome. But not for the first time it was Sports defenders who took the plaudits for a job well done. The eventual winner of the Man of the Match award was central defender Joe Newton for a towering performance in every sense of the word - Well done Joe, blooming brilliant.

Bad attitudes cost Sports
Cotgrave Colts 3 Hucknall Sports U13's White 1
Saturday 3rd December 2011
U13's Saturday Division 2
After a stunning victory to high-flying Keyworth Utd Sports had the chance to claim outright second in the league if they could secure victory against mid-table Cotgrave.
Hucknall made a blistering start to the game and did everything but score. Oliver Bowley's header narrowly missed at the near post and Tom Eastwood's run and shot was blocked at the last moment. Six Sports corners in the first 15 mins were scrambled away by Cotgrave's defenders and Hucknall's frustration at not scoring an early goal resulted in players starting to argue with each other instead of concentrating on the game.
A Cotgrave goal should have been enough to kick-start Sports into action but unfortunately all thoughts of good football and team play had gone by now. Routine control of the ball and simple passes to team mates were hard to find and at half-time Sports went into the break losing.
Half time: Cotgrave 1 Hucknall Sports 0
Harry Saxton, Dante Diriso and Ellis Evans came on as second half substitutes and all had a positive effect on the game. Evans midfield distribution of the ball settled Sports down and chances to cross from wide positions started to appear. But the final killer ball just would not come. Sports got wide time and again but failed to get the ball across and into the danger area.
Then a 'soft' free kick over the centre of Sports defence caught everyone napping and Cotgrave went further into the lead. With 20min left to go Cotgrave took advantage of more poor play from Sports and broke down the left to go 3-0 up.
Finally Sports got going when a great pass from Skipper Mitch Davies found James Hallam who finished well but it was too little too late for Sports and the final whistle blew all too soon.
Full time: Cotgrave 3 Hucknall Sports 1
Sports are unlikely to play this poorly again but football ability alone is not enough to win games. Todays result was down to bad attitudes in the warm-up being taken on to the pitch and a game that should have been comfortable for Sports turned into a nightmare. All the hard work of the previous weeks victory is now gone to waste.
There were some good performances from Ellis Evans and Harry Saxton in the second half and Mitch Davies gave everything for his team. However, today's Man of the Match winner was Tom Eastwood for never giving in and continuing to try and drive his team forward - well done Tom.

Hallam's wonder-goal moves Sports up to third
Keyworth United 1 Hucknall Sports U13's White 2
Saturday 26th November 2011
YEL Division 2
Hucknall Sports U13's returned to league action with a tough away game to high flying Keyworth United, a team considered by some to be one of the best in the Division.
Playing on high ground with blustery winds blowing directly from the top to the bottom of the pitch this was always going to be a 'game of two halves'. Sports won the toss and decided to try to take advantage of the wind at their backs by playing a 4-3-3 formation. Initially Hucknall found it difficult to work an opening but persistent good work by wingers Jacob Barlow and Dante Diriso eventually started to show some cracks in a solid looking United backline. Then Sports midfield maestro Charlie Blatherwick showed great strength coupled with the presence of mind to turn inside on the edge and smash a bullet shot into the bottom corner.
Keyworth showed signs of why they had risen to second in the league by playing neat football and got themselves back in the game when a momentary lack of concentration from the Sports centre-backs let in United's striker to lob the ball over the on-rushing Hucknall Keeper Kal Orton. But Hucknall's determination not to let this game slip away from them was clear to all and they created a number of chances that unfortunately did not manage to find the target. Blatherwick nearly got a second when his stunning volley looked certain to find the back of the net only to cannon off the inside of the post and away to safety. Sports were desperate to try and grab another goal before half time knowing that the second half would be much tougher to create chances and when a foul on Barlow just by the near touchline was awarded up stepped James Hallam to restore the lead with an absolute wonder-goal.
Half time: Keyworth Utd 1 Hucknall Sports 2
Harry Saxton, Oliver Bowley and Owen Everton all entered the game in the second half as Sports reverted back to a 4-4-2 formation knowing that they had to win the midfield battle and not allow Keyworth any shots on goal. But it was Sports who looked the more dangerous and Barlow continued to pose a threat on the wide left. Eastwood's terrific run and shot was pushed onto his post by the Keyworth goalie and Harry Saxton was unlucky not to convert a James Hallam free-kick from close in. At the other end of the pitch Hucknall defenders played magnificently and cancelled out any chance of a shot on goal time and again. Any ball that did get passed them was snapped up by Keeper Kal Orton showing what a safe pair of hands he has.
Playing clever possession football Hucknall saw out the game and celebrated a famous victory that sent out a clear sign to the rest of the league that they too are a team of the highest pedigree.

This was a truly magnificent team performance where every boy played his part in securing a great victory.
As always there were many contenders for Man of the Match. Wingers Barlow, Bowley and Diriso all did well. In midfield Captain Mitch Davies, Charlie Blatherwick and Tom Eastwood show masses of composure and passed the ball forward rather than just 'booting' it. But the winner came from Sports defensive unit who were simply magnificent. Kal Orton, Dylan Smith, Joe Newton, Ellis Evans and Harry Saxton could all have won the award but it was new-boy James Stenson who took the award for a towering performance - really well done James, keep it going.

Beales wonder-goal steals Cup victory for Rolls

YEL Trophy
The opening round of the YEL Trophy saw Hucknall Sports pitched against local rivals Rolls Royce. Both teams had won well the previous weekend so confidence was high going into this match.
Sports got off to the perfect start when James Hallam lobbed the on-rushing Rolls keeper Eddie Ridley to put Hucknall into the lead and looked to increase their advantage with some sustained pressure.
But against the run of play Rolls managed to get themselves back into the game by winning a penalty after a heaving clash in the penalty area. Rolls confidence grew and it was their turn to apply the pressure on Sports instead.
Oliver Bowley's corners were unlucky not to be converted, with Mitch Davies particularly unfortunate not to be able to get the ball from underneath his feet quickly enough to take his team back into the lead before Rolls defenders close him down and cleared their lines.
Half time: Hucknall Sports 1 Rolls Royce 1
For the first time ever Sports chose to stick with the same line-up for the second half and it very nearly reaped rewards when both Bowley and Davies saw their efforts on goal bounce narrowly wide. Eventually Jacob Barlow and Dante Diriso entered the game with some fresh legs to try and find a goal that would surely take the the tie for Sports. But Hucknall had to thank Keeper Kal Orton for two great saves before finally succumbing to a goal of the highest quality from Kieran Beales that was worthy of winning any game.
Full time: Hucknall Sports 1 Rolls Royce 2
Both teams deserve huge credit for a wonderful game of football. The town of Hucknall can certainly boast some great talent at the U13's level of Youth football.
Sport are right to be disappointed with the result, but can be proud of their style of play and on another day if they had taken their chances things would have been much different.
The contenders for Man of the Match for Sports included the entire defence of Dylan Smith, Joe Newton, James Stenson and Ellis Evans. Tom Eastwood, Owen Everton and Charlie Blatherwick gave everything in midfield and Keeper Kal Orton made three outstanding saves. But today's Man of the Match went to Oliver Bowley for a measured performance on the right of midfield where his distribution was immense and he found his team mates with passes time and again - well done Ollie, don't leave it this long before you get your next award.

A Bonfire Night Cracker for Sports
Ashfield 3 Hucknall Sports U13's White 1 (a.e.t)
Saturday 5th November 2011
The Notts FA Shield Round 2
Sports' reward for progressing to the second round of the Nottingham Shield was an away tie to unbeaten Mansfield Division One leaders Ashfield FC. Hucknall had to rearrange their line-up after the withdrawal of goalkeeper Kal Orton to an eye injury but were fortunate to find a willing and very capable replacement in James Stenson. Prior to the start of the game it appeared that Ashfield has suffered the same fate when their keeper limped out of the warm-up only to return just before kick-off.
The opening five minutes of the game showed that this was going to be a 'cup classic'. Both teams played some fantastic, measured, football demonstrating a maturity beyond their years. Ashfield won a free-kick about 30 yards from goal in a central position and a bullet shot took them into the lead with keeper Stenson standing no chance at all.
Hucknall refused to panic and a great run and cross from James Hallam, playing on the right wing, saw centre forward Ellis Evans header pushed around the post with a fine save from Ashfield's keeper. The game was end to end and Ashfield looked dangerous as they won more free-kicks from the edge of the penalty area but Sports defended well and the goal was not threatened. Dante Diriso combined well with Dylan Smith on the right-hand side and Harry Saxton and Tom Eastwood mirrored that on the left. In the centre of midfield Charlie Blatherwick and Mitch Davies battled well and made sure that Sports were first to everything.
Sports created enough chances to get back into the game, particularly from Diriso's fine corners. But the goal would not come and they went into the break 1-0 down.
Substitutes Ollie Bowley and Jacob Barlow were introduced for the second half and Evans dropped into the left-back position. Sports new look shape worked well and Barlow created an instant impact on the left wing by getting around the back of Ashfield's defence time and again. Bowley and Hallam combined well on the right and continued Sports demonstration of composed football by being patient and working an opening by playing football rather than 'booting it long'. Hallam terrorised the Ashfield defence at every opportunity and his blocked shot nearly created an opportunity for Barlow. Sports pushed and pushed for the equaliser and varied their approach to keep Ashfield guessing. Finally, a well worked move saw Barlow lay the ball back to the lively Tom Eastwood who found Blatherwick on the edge of the box where he hit a looping shot into the back of the net for Sports to draw level. Hucknall still had time to win it in the last minutes but Bowley tried to play in Hallam when other options might have brought the winner.
Extra time:
Both teams were extremely tired by this time and looked to make the ball do the work for them. The next goal was going to be vital and unfortunately for Sports it was Ashfield that got it when they bundled the ball home at the far post to regain the lead. Sports heads refused to be bowed and a Blatherwick free-kick was met by a header from Eastwood only to see the keeper make a good catch. Ashfield's third goal was from the top-drawer and was worthy of winning any game. A wonder-strike from the edge of the box was bound for the top corner and despite a fantastic effort by Stenson it dropped into the back of the net.
AET: Ashfield 3 Hucknall Sports 1
Both teams deserve huge credit for a wonderful game of football. On the evidence of this game Nottinghamshire looks well set for the next batch of footballers representing the County. Fantastic passing, wonderful tackling and great forward play were a feature throughout.
In previous weeks Sports had played some great football, but playing against top-class opposition today's second half performance had to go down as one of their best yet.
The whole team deserves to be nominated for Man of the Match but special mentions have to go to the center-half pairing of Joe Newton and Owen Everton who played wonderfully well. James Stenson, our stand-in goalie, played superb but the eventual winner was Captain Fantastic Mitch Davies. Mitch's never say die attitude and boundless energy drove his team on and very nearly helped them to pull-off the shock of the second round.
Brilliant boys, let's take this form into our next league game.

Poor Decisions Cost Sports
Hucknall Sports U13's White 0 West Bridgford Harriers 2
Saturday 22nd October 2011
YEL Division 2
Sports looked forward to their return from a weeks break with a match against West Bridgford Harriers. Both teams are renowned for playing open and entertaining football and the crowd licked their lips in anticipation.
The opening exchanges were evenly matched and each attack from one team was match by the other. The return of Charlie Blatherwick in midfield brought about the creative edge that Sports had missed in the previous game and he almost put Sports into the lead on a couple of occasions, once from a corner and once from an amazing long range free kick. Harriers found their stride and showed a fantastic range of movement and passing but the Sports defence of Dylan Smith, James Stenson, Joe Newton and Harry Saxton held strong. As the game entered its final moments of the first half the referee adjudged a fantastic block by left-back Saxton to be a foul and despite a wonderful effort by goalie Kal Orton the ball sneaked into the bottom corner. Sports still created chances to draw the scores level but had to settle for a one goal deficit at half time.
Half Time: Hucknall Sports 0 West Bridgford 1
Playing with the wind at their back Harriers pinned Sports back in their own half for much of the second period but stout defending kept Sports in the game. When Hucknall's defence was breached Harriers found Sports Keeper Orton in fantastic form. Time and again he blocked shots by diving at strikers feet showing bravery that many in the Premiership would be proud of.
Harriers went further into the lead when a neat pass inside the Sports defensive line set free their striker to finish well as Hucknall players and management waited for the off-side whistle that never came.
Sports refused to drop their heads and James Hallam strained every sinew to get his team back into the game and was unlucky on a number of occasions to see the shots narrowly miss the target. Dante Diriso just failed to convert a fantastic cross from Hallam and another trademark free-kick from Blatherwick rattled the cross-bar. But alas the full-time whistle blew for a victory to Harriers.
Final Score: Hucknall Sports 0 West Bridgford 2
Sometimes things simply don't go your way and that was definitely the case for Sports. Take nothing away from Harriers, who played a great game of football but Sports deserved to get something from this game.
Today's Man of the Match went to Kal Orton for an outstanding goalkeeping display - brilliant Kal, well done. Boys you deserved more, but your day will come.

Rolls take the honours in local Derby

Saturday 8th October 2011
YEL Division 2
Unbeaten Hucknall Sports travelled the short distance to Titchfield Park for a local derby against Rolls Royce. In complete contrast to last weekends sweltering conditions the wind was blowing and rain lashing down on a pitch that was already starting to show signs of wear.
Rolls started the game the more composed and won most of the midfield challenges to help create attacking situations for their team. Sports on the other hand were a shadow of their recent selves and looked slow and second to the ball.
A defensive mistake gifted the opening goal to Rolls and this was quickly followed by a long punt that somehow managed to find the back of Sports net. Hucknall had not even broken sweat and they found themselves 2-0 at the half time whistle.
Half Time: Rolls Royce 2 Hucknall Sports 0
Substitutes Oliver Bowley and Ellis Evans entered the game in the second half as Sports looked to try and find a way back into the game. James Hallam managed to find space at last but his flashing shot just missed the far post and then his run and cross just evaded Jacob Barlow with the goal beckoning. The Rolls defence coped well with everything that Hucknall had to offer and on the break Hucknall's central defensive partnership of James Stenson and Joe Newton had to be on their toes continually.
Sports just could not get a break with the ball bobbling time and again at the most crucial moments on a dreadful pitch. Towards the end of the game Hallam looked through on goal once more but another poor bounce just prior to kicking took the edge of his shot and it was gathered in easily by Edward Ridley in the Rolls goal.
Final Score: Rolls Royce 2 Hucknall Sports 0
This has to go down as a 'bad day at the office' for Sports and should not take anything away from their fine start to the season. Tom Eastwood's battling midfield performance and Oliver Bowley's measured approach to the game made them both good candidates for Man of the Match but the clear winner was Dylan Smith.
Smith put in an exemplary display of defending to deny the dangerous Rolls attackers time and space. But there is more to his game than just defending and he had the composure to bring the ball forward skilfully in an attempt to get his team going.
Well done - Dylan.

Goal Fest for Splendid Sports
U13's Saturday Divison 2
Hucknall Sports 7 Edwalton 3
24 /09/11
Game three of the new season saw Hucknall Sports entertaining Edwalton Cavaliers, a team renown for playing good stylish football. Prior to the game Sports players we presented with their brand new Home kit sponsored by Nottingham Audi and looked resplendent as the game got ready to kick-off.
Playing with the wind at their backs Sports started very slowly and looked a shadow of the team that put Wollaton to the sword last weekend, in fact it is fair to say that Edwalton started much the better team. But Sports got a lucky break when Oliver Bowley's corner found the back of the net closely followed by a goal from James Hallam after a fumble by the opposition goalie. Somehow Sports were 2-0 up without actually finding their rhythm. A series of fouls by Sports handed the initiative back to Edwalton and Hucknall had to thank goalie Kal Orton for keeping the score sheet blank with a fine couple of saves. Then a push in the penalty saw Edwalton awarded a penalty that got them back into the game and set themselves for a strong end to the first half.
Half Time: Hucknall Sports 2 Edwalton 1
New signing James Stenson made his debut for Sports in the second half and Jacob Barlow made a welcome return to the left wing position.
Edwalton really fancied their chances and with the wind at their backs looked to draw the scores level as soon as possible. Sports midfield braced themselves for a battling performance knowing that they could not allow a shot on goal and to a man they performed brilliantly. Tom Eastwood, Charlie Blatherwick, Mitch Davies and Dante Diriso all put in a magnificent performance at the heart of the team. Hucknall finally found their confidence and fluidity and started to find space around the back of Edwalton. Hallam scored a second after typical hard work and then turned provider for Tom Eastwood to score at the far post after a great, defensive splitting cross. Eastwood quickly followed up with another well taken goal and them Hallam fed Diriso who took his goal with style to effectively close out the game for Sports. Credit to Edwalton for continuing to try and play football and they got their rewards with a couple of consolation goals. However, Sports had the final word when a great cross from Diriso made it easy for the Eastwood to smash in his hat-trick goal.
Final Score: Hucknall Sports 7 Edwalton 3
Last weeks first half performance was perfection and this weeks second half was close to that also. So many good performances that all the team should really get a mention, but the following boys deserve recognition for playing a great game. Defenders Dylan Smith, Joe Newton, James Stenson and Harry Saxton all did fantastically well particularly in the second half. In midfield Skipper Mitch Davies and Charlie Blatherwick were wonderful. Up front Hallam was a constant threat and Dante Dirso had a great second half, really imposing himself on the game. However, the Man of the Match award went to Tom Eastwood for showing what a great player he is to score a hat-trick from midfield - Well done Tom, that's five for the season already, brilliant.

U13's Saturday Challenge Shield
Hucknall Sports 7 Quarrydale Rangers Utd 0
1/10/11
Sports fourth game of their U13's season saw them drawn against Quarrydale Rangers Utd from the Mansfield league in the first round of the Nottinghamshire Challenge Shield.
In stifling heat and playing on the magnificent Goosedale Cottage pitch Sports were determined to put on a performance to match their surroundings.
Hucknall started very well and Dante Diriso continued where he left off the previous week and provided a constant threat from the right side of midfield. Hucknall went ahead when James Hallam's pin-point cross found Ellis Evans unmarked at the far post to head in and then Hallam got on the score sheet himself when he capitalised on an hesitant Quarrydale defence to slot the ball home from close range. Midfielder Tom Eastwood and Diriso both went close to pushing Sports further ahead but found a stubborn resistance from the lively Quarrydale goalie. Whilst at the other end of the pitch Sports defenders Dylan Smith, James Stenson, Joe Newton and Harry Saxton played magnificently to see off any threat of a chance on goal by the visitors.
Half Time: Hucknall Sports 2 Quarrydale Rangers Utd 0
Substitutes Oliver Bowley and Jacob Barlow entered the game in the second half as Sports looked to put the match out of reach and got the perfect start when the brilliant Hallam smashed his second goal after a typical strong run on goal.
This was a body blow to Quarrydale but all credit to them for not letting their heads drop. Left wing maestro Barlow created a massive impact (for the second week running) and showed great style and composure to finish his two goals well. Man of the Match Charlie Blatherwick got in on the scoring and Tom Eastwood netted his 6th goal of the season with a mazy run and neat finish.
Final Score: Hucknall Sports 7 Quarrydale Ranger Utd 0
On a scorching October day Sports put in another wonderful performance to keep their 100% win record going. It is fantastic to see training ground moves being put into practise and the boys playing with such confidence. In the squad of 14 there are no weak links and the team looks strong no matter who starts and who doesn't.
Today's Man of the Match award could have gone to anyone of the 14 boys but the eventual winner was Striker turned Midfield-Master Charlie Blatherwick for another outstanding display. He knows when to pass and when to tackle and has made the centre of midfield his own - brilliant, well done.
On a personal note, welcome back mum and dad.

Heroic win for Sports
U13's Saturday Davison 2
Wollaton Hall 3 Hucknall Sports 6
17/09/11
Sports second game of the season took them to Wollaton Park for a game against newly promoted Wollaton Hall.
During a pre-season friendly Hall had shocked Sports by playing well to win 4-3 and with only 11 players available Hucknall knew they had to pull out a special performance get anything from this game.
Short of players Sports had to juggle their line-up for this match and selected Welsh Wizard Ellis Evans to play along side James Hallam in attack and Harry Saxton filled in at centre half with Joe Newton.
Five minutes into the game Dylan Smith released Hallam with an amazing pass that allowed him to continue his fine start to the season with a goal made out of pure pace and skill as he rounded the Wollaton defence to fire an angled shot over the head of the keeper to put Sports into a lead.
Hucknall were absolutely rampant and Tom Eastwood scored his second of the season with a well taken goal and then Evans smashed in an exquisite volley that wouldn't have been out of place in the Premiership to put Sports 3-0 up.
On a rare break Wollaton were foiled by a magnificent save from Kal Orton and then with half time approaching Oliver Bowley put in a great corner that Captain Mitch Davies smashed into the back of the net with a trademark towering header.
Phew, what wonderful half of football from Sports - probably their best ever.
Half Time: Wollaton Hall 0 Hucknall Sports 4
Injuries to Bowley, Hallam, and Smith meant that Sports effectively started the second half with only 8 fit players but they continued to play a fantastic brand of football. Charlie Blatherwick put in another stunning performance at the heart of midfield showing a wonderful range of passing and vision. He looked all set to cap his day with a goal only to see it balloon over the bar after a bad bobble. Playing through the pain, Hallam turned creator and his blistering wing play set up Evans for a well deserved second.
Sports were out on their feet and inevitably gaps started to appear. Newton, Saxton, Diriso and Smith defended brilliantly well and behind them keeper Orton pulled off a string of great saves late on. All credit to Wollaton Hall for never giving in and two quick goals provided a spark of revival. But any chance of a shock comeback were shattered when Bowley smashed in a shot from just inside the box to seal victory for Sports. Hall grabbed a late consolation but Sports ran out winners for the second week running.
Final Score: Wollaton Hall 3 Hucknall Sports 6
This was a truly heroic performance by Sports that was built on a fantastic passing game and wonderful team spirit. Having no substitutes available meant tiredness was always going to play its part but Sports boys gave absolutely everything for the team and got their rewards.
Some many good performances once again made picking a Man of the Match very difficult but on this occasion the stand out performance was clear to all. With one of the best creative performances witnessed for a long long time today's winner was Ellis Evans - absolutely awesome, well done Ell and we look forward to more of the same.

Hucknall Sports 3 Clifton AW 1
10/11/11
Sport welcomed Clifton AW to new home ground Goosedale Sports Complex for this opening game of the season.
Kicking off early in great late summer weather and playing on the 'Cottage' pitch everything was set for both teams to put on a great display of football.
Understandably, both teams looked a little rusty in the early stages but eventually Sports midfield of Oliver Bowley, Mitch Davies, Charlie Blatherwick and Tom Eastwood took control and started to find their range to create great openings for their Strikers. Jacob Barlow made the most of space on the left to get around the back of All Whites defence and on the other flank James Hallam put in a fine performance that terrorised his markers. Sports were unlucky not to go ahead from a high looping shot from Blatherwick but finally found the net through a Tom Eastwood header after a fine run and cross from Hallam. This was followed almost immediately by a goal for Hallam after good work from Barlow once again.
Clifton's attacker was finally set free after a well worked moved but Sports Keeper Kal Orton was alert and dived bravely at the feet of the on rushing striker to make a block.
Sports were rampant and drove forward for more goals but just could not find the net.
Half Time: Hucknall Sports 2 Clifton AW 0
Hucknall continued were they left off in the first half and found ways to get around the back of Clifton time and again. Barlow once more providing a massive threat with his fantastic wing play.
A trip on Blatherwick in the penalty area went un-noticed but Sports stretched their lead to three when Ellis (Welsh Wizard) Evans bundled the ball into the net after another great cross from Barlow to the far post.
Late in the game Sport defence came under some pressure as Clifton tried to find a way back into the game. Mitch Davies blocked a free kick on the edge of his box only to see the ball bounce back to Clifton who sent a looping shot over the unlucky Orton. Davies continued his fine Captains performance with a couple of towering headers to clear the lines from threatening All Whites corners and saw his team home to clinch a win in their first game of the season.
Final Score: Hucknall Sports 3 Clifton 1
Great performance by the entire team with fantastic team play and attitude throughout.
Seems unfair to pick a Man of the Match with so many great displays but today's award went to James Hallam for a truly amazing performance of strength and speed that set the pulses racing with excitement every time he got the ball - Brilliant James, well done.

Sports vow to bounce straight back
U12's Saturday Division 1
14 /5/11
Radcliffe Olympic 3 Hucknall Sports 2
A frustrating season for Hucknall drew to a close with an away match against Radcliffe Olympic with Sports still needing 3 points to force the YEL to make the final decision on relegation.
After three games in 7 days it was understandable that Sports would be slow out of the block and so it proved to be. Hucknall had to reshuffle the line-up due to a couple of last minute absentees and with the wind blustering at their backs Radcliffe took the lead after 10 mins when a moments hesitation in defence created the breakthrough. Hucknall players were shouting for Radcliffe to put the ball out of play with Ellis Evans flat-out on the floor but unbelievably play continued and Olympic went further into the lead. Obviously little sign of 'sportsmanship' nowadays in the South of Nottingham. But if Radcliffe thought that Hucknall had thrown in the towel they were sadly mistaken. Galvanised by the football of Harry Saxton and Ryan Towle in defence Sports got into their stride and a great pass from Charlie Blatherwick released James Hallam to make a bullet of a shot that the Radcliffe keeper did well to push around the post. Further chances fell to Hucknall and Jacob Barlow was unlucky to see his shot narrowly miss the far post after another good move.
Half-time: Radcliffe Olympic 2 Hucknall Sports 0
Playing with the wind at their backs Hucknall knew they had to get a goal early on to give themselves any chance of getting back into the game and super-striker Hallam obliged by thundering down the right wing to blast a fantastic 14th goal of the season - game on! Sports midfield stepped up to every challenge put in front of them and Mitch Davies, Blatherwick and Tom Eastwood started pushing Hucknall forward for the equaliser. In a reverse of the situation where Radcliffe scored their second goal Sports looked all set to equalise only for play to be stopped for an injury. But Sports pushed again and again, Hallam's fantastic cross narrowly missed out both Eastwood and Barlow with the goal at their mercy to leave players with their heads in hands. Then Radcliffe snatched a third when Hucknall failed to defend a corner but Sports scored soon after when Mitch Davies got on the end of a fine run and cross from Barlow (that's £5.00 you owe him Julian) to setup up a dramatic last minute. Sport supporters held their breath in the final seconds when Towle pushed forward from defence to launch a long-range shot but it sailed agonisingly over and the game was over.
Final Score: Radcliffe Olympic 3 Hucknall Sports 2
A slow start to this game probably cost Sports any chance of victory ultimately, but inconsistent decisions certainly did not help either.
The three main contenders for Man of the Match today were Harry Saxton, James Hallam and Ryan Towle and in truth they probably all deserved the trophy but for his work to snuff out one of the most dangerous strikers in the league the award went to Ryan for a wonderful, strong, defensive performance - brilliant Ryan, well done, fantastic.
With all the breaks in their league fixtures this season it feels like Hucknall have only just established a pattern to their game and the season has come to an end all too soon.
It is small comfort that Sports have only lost by a single goal to teams with 20 more points than them in the last few games of the season but the boys have to take heart from this fact.
Sports may be down, but they are not done!
Sports bad luck continues
U12's Saturday Division 1

Underwood Villa 2 Hucknall Sports 2
Hucknall Sports played their penultimate league match against the improving Underwood Villa searching for a win to keep their Division One survival dreams alive. The combination of a warm early summers evening and Wigwam pitch with plenty of grass on it made for ideal playing conditions .
Oliver Bowley deputised at right-back due to the delayed arrival of Dylan Smith who had been caught up in traffic on his way to the game. Sports took a little time to settle into their game and Underwood pressured Hucknall's defence in looking for the opening goal. Villa relied on the long-ball over the top to set free their speedy striker but Hucknall's defence managed the tactic well and although chances were created none really threaten the Sports goal. On a rare sortie forward by Hucknall the ball broke to Ellis 'Welsh Wizard' Evans on the edge of the penalty area and he fired a looping shot into the top corner. Not long afterwards Charlie Blatherwick was unlucky to see his shot blocked when it seemed destined for the top corner. Underwood forced a fantastic save from Kal Orton when he managed to get finger-tips to shot and force it up and over the bar. But Villa's pressure eventually paid off and as the game reached half time the score was levelled at 1-1.
Half-time: Underwood Villa 1 Hucknall Sports 1
For the first time in a while Sports chose not to change things at half-time and with instructions to win the midfield battle ringing in their ears Hucknall burst into life as soon as the referees whistle blew. James Hallam's surging runs caused all sorts of problems for Villa. Sports were dominant in all areas of the game. Jacob Barlow made great use of the space afforded to him on the wings and Sports midfield of Mitch Davies, Charlie Blatherwick and Tom Eastwood won everything. Ryan Towle and Joe Newton mopped up the centre defence with style and drove the team forward from the back at every opportunity. The continued resurgence of Harry Saxton at left-back and sublime skills of Dylan Smith meant that Sports were well on top. Then came 10 mins that could effect the total outcome of Sports season.
A crunching tackle from Saxton created a chance for Eastwood to break and thread a neat pass through to Hallam who took on his man and slotted the ball home only for the referee to give off-side. Then to rub salt in the wounds a ball over the top found the Underwood striker in acres of space and looked for the world to be off-side himself only for the referee not to agree and Villa went into the lead. Sports were not done yet though and a Ryan Towle free-kick was parried into the feet of Charlie Blatherwick to blast Sports level. There was only one team in the game now and Hucknall thought they had won it when a head on from Bowley found Hallam in space to round the keeper but his shot hit the post, rolled along the line and was cleared to safety.
Final Score: Underwood Villa 2 Hucknall Sports 2
Difficult to find words to sum up how Sports felt after this game. Surely our luck has to change soon, and hopefully it will in our last game on Saturday away to Radcliffe Olympic.
This was a great team performance and it would be fair to say that everyone played their part in a great game and gave their all for the team.
Kal Orton, Dylan Smith, Ryan Towle, Joe Newton, Harry Saxton, Mitch Davies, Charlie Blatherwick, Tom Eastwood, Jacob Barlow, Ellis Evans, James Hallam and Oliver Bowley can all consider themselves very worthy of man of the match recognition. However, for his determination to push and push and push again this weeks award goes to James Hallam - a terrific display of leading the line, well done kiddo.

Heartbreak for Sports once again
U12's Saturday Division 1
7/5/11
Hucknall Sports 3 West Bridgford Spiders 4
This Saturday saw County Cup winners West Bridgford Spiders travel to Wigwam Playing Fields for Sports U12's Division One match with Hucknall looking for points to move them off the bottom of the table. Light rain made the playing surface perfect for a good game and Hucknall looked forward to playing against a team renowned for being one of the most skilful in the division.
With only Mitch Davies and Dante Diriso missing Sports were able to field an almost full strength side and looked much more solid in midfield thanks to the return of Charlie Blatherwick. A crunching tackle from the rejuvenated Harry Saxton in the first five minutes set the tone for Hucknall's defence and midfield to be first to the ball and win all the 50/50 challenges. West Bridgford simply could not get into their stride and Hucknall took a deserved lead when James Hallam wriggled round the last defender to slot the ball into the bottom corner. Hallam and Buckly Gibson-Brown continued their progress as a striker partnership and a great cross narrowly evaded left winger Jacob Barlow at the far post with Sports looking to extend their lead even further. Sports robust defending saw them concede a couple of free-kicks just on the edge of their own penalty area but solid keeping from Kal Orton removed any chance of a goal being scored. Ryan Towle and Joe Newton remained solid at the heart of defence, Dylan Smith and Oliver Bowley performed well together on the right-side and Tom Eastwood won everything on the left to help to take Sports into half-time leading 1-0.
Half time: Hucknall Sport 1 West Bridgford 0
Humid conditions sapped energy from Sports wary legs and injury to Hallam meant that Hucknall had to reshuffle their line up with William Brown starting up front and Ellis Evans slotted into right midfield. Great work from the Blatherwick created an opportunity to for Barlow to get around the back of Spiders defence to fashion a chance for Brown to shoot but Spider's last ditch block did just enough to clear the ball. Almost from the break Bridgford drew level and Sports clamoured for Hallam to rejoin the game - which despite injury he manfully did. The game then entered its best phase of football with both teams playing great stuff. Firstly, Sports retook the lead with a goal from Gibson-Brown only for Spiders to draw level. A fantastic break by Sports saw a wonderful move result in Hallam smashing low to help Sports retain the lead with on 10 minutes to go. Hucknall could have extended their lead further when Barlow narrowly missed a great opportunity at the far post after a blistering run and cross from Hallam.
But things were not finished yet and Hucknall were left heartbroken when a fisted clearance from Kal Orton hit the Spiders striker in the face and rebounded into the back of the net to level the scores. The final blow arrived when Joe Newton was carried off with an ankle injury and then a monster clearance somehow found Spiders striker clear of his marker to loft the ball into the back of the net.
Sports had one final chance to draw level from a Ryan Towle free-kick, but Spiders giant keeper held on with Hallam about to pounce and the final whistle blew.

What can you say to summarise this game?
The boys deserve massive credit for playing the best football of their season to try and get something from this game but you can't legislate for the final two goals that saw them lose this game.
The opposition Manager (not for the first time) was puzzled to know how come we are bottom of the league when playing like this.
So many players deserve credit for outstanding performances in this game but I will pick out just four. James Hallam, Harry Saxton and Ryan Towle showed that Hucknall boys have the stomach for a battle and gave everything for the team. However today's Man of the Match went to Charlie Blatherwick for an outstanding performance in midfield. If only he had been with us for every game things might have been a little different.
We still have three matches to go and 6 points should see us safe. But whatever the outcome you can take massive confidence from a game like this when you have been absolutely wonderful.

Sports shock Lowdham to claim victory
U12's Saturday Division 1
9/4 /11
Lowdham Colts 1 Hucknall Sports 2
On Grand National day Sports travelled to Lowdham gambling on playing a double-header to climb out of the relegation places at the bottom of Division One. Lowdham sat 4th in the league and this was always going to be 'big ask' of the Hucknall boys but recent results had sparked their confidence and Sports started fantastically well and really took the game to Colts with a series of great passing moves.
Hucknall's new midfield pairing of Charlie Blatherwick and Tom Eastwood work fantastically well and Ellis Evans and Oliver Bowley on the right-hand side created a well balanced look. Hucknall's midfield ran the show in the first half and carved out chances that Sports forward line narrowly failed to convert. James Hallam, Jacob Barlow and Buckly Gibson-Brown all having shots blocked by last ditch tackles from Colts.
In defence, William Brown played as the make-shift left back and didn't let anyone down with a solid performance. Ryan Towle, Joe Newton and Dylan Smith provide a great defensive line in front of Kal Orton who was brave in coming off his line but in truth didn't have a lot to do in the first half.
Half time: Lowdham Colts 0 Hucknall Sport 0
Hucknall moved up a gear in the second half and their great play finally brought a goal when Charlie Blatherwick's high looping lob found the back of the net from wide on the left side of the penalty area. Sports narrowly missed taking a two goal lead when Gibson-Browns terrific volley from the edge of the area screamed past the far post with the goalkeeper nowhere to be seen. Colts managed to find their passing game at last and the two teams really put on a treat for the spectators on a bobbly pitch. Sports defence dealt with the pressure well looked to be holding on for victory when a corner 2 mins from time found a Lowdham player spare on the back post and despite Bowley's attempts to clear off of the line the ball hit the bar and bounced into the back of the net. Sports players were shattered but remembering last weeks last minute come-back they pushed forward and for the second week running Jacob Barlow was the hero when he found the back of Lowham's net from the far post.
Wild celebrations erupted from Sports players and fans as with only 30 seconds left the game was won.
For the second week running Sports have now grabbed victory in the last minutes of the game to give them a real chance of avoiding relegation.
Lowdham's Management were very generous in their praise of Sports and showed fantastic sportsmanship.
The Man of the Match award went to Charlie Blatherwick for a fabulous performance in midfield along side his new partner Tom Eastwood - well done Charlie.
Second Game
Injuries leave Sports running on empty
After a 10 minute break Sports started their second match of the day and with a win under their belts continued to have the confidence to play well. But when Hucknall's defenders failed to clear the ball in the middle of their penalty area Lowdham pounced and snatched an early lead. James Hallam's blistering pace saw him round the back line of Lowdham with ease but his fine cross could not be finished. Sports were starting to look leggy and players had to be substituted to give them a breather. Then the key moment of the game arrived when three players collided in the Sports penalty area and the ball somehow found the back of the net. Sports had to take off both their goalkeeper Kal Orton and centre-back Joe Newton both with nasty looking injuries. This gave the chance for Joe Harley give his goalkeeping skills a go and Tom Eastwood dropped back to centre-back.
In truth Sports couldn't recover from this body blow and despite putting every ounce of energy into the game they were just too short of players to cope. Gaps started to appear in the defence and Lowdham ran out 6-1 winners in the end, with Jacob Barlow once more getting a late goal.
Man of the Match went to Tom Eastwood for a wonderful performance and showing what a versatile player he is in playing both defence and attack - well done Tommy
So the gamble didn't quite pay off, but three points is extremely valuable to Sports survival hopes.
Not many would have give Hucknall a prayer against the 4th team in Division One, but this shows just what they can do.
We have small gap now until our next game, but hope to have all the boys fit and well for what promises to be an exciting end to the season - Come on you Sports you can do it!!!

No Reward for Sports Dominance
U12's Saturday Division 1
19/ 3 /11
Hucknall Sports 1 Underwood Villa 4
Great weather and playing surface greeted both teams as they arrived at Goosedale for this League One relegation 6-pointer between Sports and Underwood Villa.
Sports started well and created many chances through their good play with Mitch Davies and Charlie Blatherwick dominating midfield possession. But Hucknall's attacking threesome looked laboured at times and the the final pass from midfield just could not find its man. Despite dominating play Hucknall were caught out by a free-kick hoofed over top just before half to go into the break losing 1-0.
Half time: Hucknall Sport 0 Underwood Villa 1
Sports were never out of this game at 1-0 down, but in charging forward looking for the equaliser they were caught out on the break with 3 goals in short space of time to trail 4-1 with 10 minutes to go. Clear-cut chances were hard to find for Sports, but a Ryan Towle free-kick was probably the closest Hucknall came to scoring. James Hallam, Charlie Blatherwick and Ellis Evans all attempted to test the 'stand-in' Villa Keeper Jacob Beer but without success. Blatherwick did manage to connect with a header from a Sports corner to suggest another fight back, but the clock ran out all too soon and Villa celebrated victory at the final whistle safe in the knowledge that they had created a 5-point gap at the bottom of the table.
Full time: Hucknall Sports 1 Underwood Villa 4
Considering their first half dominance Sports really should have been out of site by half time, but the goals just did not come and all credit to Villa for weathering the early storm. Hucknall need learn some patience and going a goal down with 30 mins still let to play does not mean that all shape and positions are abandoned. There is enough quality in this team to get back into any game but only if discipline and positioning is maintained.
Get to bed early this Friday and turn up refreshed and ready for our semi-final with Dunkirk on Saturday.
The Man of the Match was a close run thing between Tom Eastwood, Mitch Davies and Charlie Blatherwick, with the aware going to Charlie in the end - well done in your new position and we look forward to more of the same next week.

Classy Sports fail to break down Valley
U12's Saturday Division 1
5/6/11
East Valley 2 Hucknall Sports 0
8 weeks after their last match Hucknall Sports U12's finally got back to football action with an away match against East Valley at their new ground in Arnold.
Heavy rain made for difficult conditions, but the Valley pitch was in great shape and the match was never in doubt.
Hucknall started the game playing some composed football and held possession well against a combative Valley side. Winger Jacob Barlow managed to find space to use his lightning speed to great effect to get around the back of the opposition, but his final delivery was well defended and clear chances were hard to find for Sports.
Valley took the lead by pouncing on a loose ball just outside the penalty area and scored from a lofted shot that looped agonisingly over Hucknall's keeper and into the back of the net. Sports kept playing attractive football and showed some great inter-play in tight areas of the pitch to show that training ground drills are beginning to sink in but Valley moved into a two goal lead when towering Striker Lavontie Raekwon capped off his return from injury with a well taken goal made of pure strength and guile. An unfortunate slip from striker Hallam with the goal at his mercy encapsulated Sports season and heading for the break keeper Kal Orton kept his team in the game with a penalty save.
Half time: East Valley 2 Hucknall Sports 0
Oliver Bowley and live-wire Buckly Gibson-Brown entered the game as second half substitutes seeking to provide some better threat for Sports in the attacking half of the pitch but once again with Hucknall having the majority of possession they still could not muster a clear chance on goal. Long range efforts from Dante Diriso, Captain Thomas Eastwood and Gibson-Brown were all that Hucknall had to show for their skill and effort. Ryan Towle, Dylan Smith and Joe Newton shut out Valley at the other end of the pitch but Sports just could not find a way to goal.
Full time: East Valley 2 Hucknall Sports 0
It's hard to find the words to describe how frustrating this season is proving to be, but there are plenty of games left for Sports to secure enough points to preserve their status as a Division One team.
Man of the Match today went to the well deserving Dylan Smith. His tackling skill and ability going forward were a pleasure to watch and appreciated not just by his own team but also the opposition Manager. Well done Dylan and we look forward to many more memorable games with you in a Red and White shirt.

Sports give Long Eaton a real fright
15/01/11
Saturday U12's Division One
Long Eaton 3 Hucknall Sports 1
Blustery conditions greeted Hucknall and Long Eaton as they arrived at West Park for their second game in a week. Predictions of a thrashing for Sports had emerged from some of the Long Eaton players after they had won 4-0 the previous week.
Playing into the wind Sports started the better of the two teams and central midfielders Mitch Davies and Harry (H-Bomb) Saxton worked hard to take possession of the ball. Hucknall created the first of the games chances from a good cross by Jacob Barlow that Long Eaton managed to scramble away from James Hallam as he was waiting to pounce. Frustrated Long Eaton showed a moment of composure to sidestep a challenge on the edge of the Sports penalty area and finished well to take the lead and then in first half injury time United went 2-0 up with a half-volley goal that just eluded Sports keeper Kal Orton.
Half Time: Long Eaton 2 Hucknall Sports 0
Sports now had the advantage of the wind with at their backs and Long Eaton struggled to get out of their own half as Hucknall pushed forward. Good pressure from James Hallam created a defensive mix-up in the United backline and he fired Sports back into the game when intercepting a poor back pass. United were rattled and when Hucknall were awarded a free-kick wide on the left Sports fans sensed a chance to draw level but Blatherwick's goal-bound header was defended well. Sports right winger, Buckly Gibson-Brown, found himself clear on goal but just as he was about to shoot a last ditched United challenge cleared the ball. Then cruelly, with Sports going all out for an equaliser United broke and scored what a proved to be a vital third goal as the wind abated just long enough to allow rare second half Long Eaton shot to drift over the Sports goalie and into the back of the net.
Full Time: Long Eaton 3 Hucknall Sports 1
What a difference a week makes - The entire Sports squad showed tremendous believe in their ability to match the challenge of Long Eaton and on another day could easily have got something out of the game.
Many great performances all around the pitch mean that this weeks choice was particularly hard work. But for his fantastic heading, tackling and passing in midfield the award went to Mitch Davies.
His after-match video comments stating that the team had battled hard and closed down everything applied as much to him as the entire team - well done Mitch.
Let's take great heart from this performance and kick-on now for the rest of the season boys.

Tough start to the new year for Sports
8/01/11
Saturday U12's Division One
Hucknall Sports 0 Long Eaton 4
Friday's light snow cleared in time for Sports to get back to Division One football action with a game against unbeaten Long Eaton United.
Sports started sluggishly and Long Eaton soon took full advantage with a well worked goal taking them into the lead after only minutes of the game. Hucknall then lost both Charlie Blatherwick and Mitch Davies in a matter of minutes to injury and had to introduce Harry Saxton and Dante Diriso in their place. Understandably, Sports midfield needed time to settle down but United were in no mood to allow that to happen and played some neat football to move into a three goal lead. Hucknall were struggling to find their passing range, but the introduction of Buckly Gibson-Brown brought about a positive effect and his long pass narrowly avoided putting James Hallam through on goal. Perhaps Sports best chance came from a long range Ryan Towle free-kick that the United keeper did well to hold onto at the second attempt.
Half Time: Hucknall Sports 0 Long Eaton United 3
Finally, Sports started to settle and the game levelled out into a battle of two midfields in the second half. Long Eaton extended their lead when Sports failed to close down the opposition striker who finished well. Late in the game Sports best move the match saw Mitch Davies put Gibson-Brown in behind the United defence and his cross was only narrowly put over the bar by the on rushing Dante Diriso.

After seven weeks without a competitive game Sports were bound to look a little 'rusty' and so it proved to be. We will get back to basics in training again this week and look to bring our composure from their into next Saturday's game.
Despite losing this game Sports had some notable performances. Ryan Towle and Joe Newton continue to look like a good defensive partnership and keeper Kal Orton did his reputation no harm at all with another great display. Ellis Evans showed more composure than most and looked to play some really clever football with neat passing and great vision. Today's Man of the Match went to Tom Eastwood for a great show of strength at left back. He coped with everything that United threw at him and showed what a valuable member of the team he is - well done Tommy.
Full Time: Hucknall Sports 0 Long Eaton United 4
Sports Victory at last
U12's Saturday Division One
2/ 4 /11
Clifton AW 2 Hucknall Sports 3
Sports got back to League action looking to put last weeks semi-final exit behind them in a bottom of the table match with Clifton All Whites.
The welcome site of a well organised senior referee set the tone for an excellent game of football. Clifton started well and playing with a strong wind at their backs laid siege to the Sports goal with a wave of attack after attack. Hucknall's back line looked stretched at times and had to work very hard to keep the ball out of the net. Kal Orton made a string of great saves and Dylan Smith, Tom Eastwood, Joe Newton and Ryan Towle all defended extremely well. However, good work in midfield by All Whites created a well taken goal. But Sports have found confidence in recent performances and were not about to give in. Ellis Evans played a great ball into Buckly Gibson-Brown (Captain) and his cultured shot with the outside of his boot narrowly missed the target. Time and again the off-side flag was raised to frustrate Hucknall's strikers but eventually Gibson-Brown found a way through and slotted home to draw the teams level just before half-time.
Half time: Clifton AW 1 Hucknall Sports 1
Oliver Bowley gave Sport the perfect start to the second half when he coolly slotted the ball home from just inside the penalty area after unselfish work from Jacob Barlow. But Sports were forced into more changes when Bowley was replaced by William Brown after receiving a heavy blow to the head. Hucknall created chance after chance to close out the game with James Hallam, Gibson-Brown and Charlie Blatherwick all going close. Hallam smashed another chance against the post and Barlow saw a shot go narrowly wide of the far post. Then with only 10 mins left All Whites were awarded a penalty when Ryan Towle was unluckily adjudged to have handled the ball. Sport Keeper Orton only narrowly avoided stopping the ball hitting the back of the net. This was cruel luck for Sports but showing real character a driving run from Sports Tom Eastwood forced a throw-in just inside Clifton's half that found Barlow in space on the left side. He cut into the edge of the box and with the goalkeeper advancing of his line he brilliantly lofted the ball over him and into the back of the net - what a goal, what a winner.
Sports played sensibly for the final minutes and celebrated wildly their first win of the season at the final whistle.
Final score: Clifton All Whites 2 Hucknall Sports 3
If Sports had not got victory out of this game then they would have had every right to be really disappointed but thankfully their determination to win saw them get to result they deserved and we all know that that has not happened very often this season.
In a game of high standards there were stand-out performances from a number of boys with Bowley, Hallam, Blatherwick, Barlow and Gibson-Brown all doing well. Midfielder Mitch Davies continues to play fantastically well, but today's winner was Ryan Towle who eventually worked out how to play the difficult conditions and showed great discipline by doing the right things at the right time in the heart of defence.
We will need a number of performances like this before the end of the season, but it is clear that this team has the ability and with that they now have the confidence - Come on boys let's show Division One what we can do!
Phew, what a game!!!

Semi-final agony for Sports
U12's Saturday Semi-Final
26/ 3 /11
Dunkirk 6 Hucknall Sports 2
Having endured a tough League campaign Hucknall arrived at Clifton Bridge determine d to make the most of their semi-final clash with high-flying Dunkirk Colts who remain unbeaten in the league this year.
Playing on a massive pitch and having to make the teamtalk outside due to a total blackout in the Away teams changing rooms Sports started the game somewhat shaken and were put under pressure straight away. A hard surface made judging the bounce of the ball very difficult and Hucknall's defence struggled to clear their lines. Dunkirks pressure was rewarded with a goal but almost immediately Sports nearly got back into the game when a clever pass from Charlie Blatherwick narrowly failed to find Buckly Gibson-Brown in the oppositions penalty area. Dunkirk were relentless and in a short spell before half-time scored three quick goals (with more than a hint of a question mark over two of them) to go into the break with comfortable lead.
Half time: Dunkirk 4 Hucknall Sports 0
With the advantage of a strong wind at their back Sports took to the field with a new look midfield of Mitch Davies, Blatherwick and James Hallam. Up front, Oliver Bowley and Gibson-Brown formed the front-two. Sports were awarded a free-kick midway into the Dunkirk half and up-stepped Ryan Towle to put the goalie to the test. His free-kick could only be parried by Colts Keeper and the quick thinking Gibson-Brown cooly slotted home. Dunkirk looked rattled and when Gibson-Brown repeated the move 5 minutes later you could see the panic in Colts back-line and the instructions from the sidelines got louder and louder, if that were possible :-)
But in pushing forward Sports inevitably left gaps in their backline and without regular defender Dylan Smith to snuff out chances on the right-handside Dunkirk got themselves back on steady ground and the game was lost when a mix-up in Sports defence presented a open goal.
Final score: Dunkirk 6 Hucknall Sports 2
I am sure that the lack of lights in the Away teams dressing room and unhelpful remarks from the Dunkirk fans were totally out of the control of anyone connected with the team, but this game left Sports with a nasty taste in their mouths.
A long over due Man of the Match Award went to Buckly Gibson-Brown who's two goals really lifted the team and asked a question of Dunkirk that it is clear they were not expecting given the half-time score. Well done Buck and we look forward to more performances like this in the final games of the season.

Sports Rollercoaster ride continues
U12's Saturday Division 1
12/ 3 /11
Vernon Colts 4 Hucknall Sports 4
A rock hard pitch welcomed Hucknall Sports U12's to Vernon Park for their League One match against Vernon Colts. In the previous meeting Sports had contrived to throw away a two goal lead to lose 4-2 but the boys arrived in good heart and ready to play.
Disappointingly for Sports management all training drills and match instructions were forgotten by the players and within 10 mins of the start Hucknall found themselves 2-0 down. Sloppy play throughout the entire team meant that Vernon did not need to work very hard for their lead. Injury to Ellis Evans meant that an early switch was enforced and Dante Diriso entered the fray. Sports settled down a little and some chances started to appear but the large frame of Vernon's goalie denied both James Hallam and Buckly Gibson-Brown in one-on-one situations. The off-side flag caught out both teams but Sports were probably the most guiltly of not looking along with line when in promising attacking positions. Finally Hucknall's breakthrough came with a well taken goal by Charlie Blatherwick and it looked like Sports had turned a corner only for more sloppy play to gift Vernon their third goal just before half-time.
Half time: Vernon 3 Hucknall Sports 1
Oliver Bowley (right-wing) and William Brown (centre midfield) entered the game as second half substitutes but once again Sports defence failed clear their lines and Vernon took a 4-1 lead with only 20 mins left on the clock - Game over , well not quite!
Finally, Sports decided to start playing football and the rewards duly arrived. Firstly the ever-dangerous Hallam burst clear to smash a shot into the far left corner of the goal and then simple play between Bowley and Diriso saw Hallam grab his double with another well taken goal. Brown played a lovely ball inside the Vernon right-back for Jacob Barlow to cross for Blatherwick to score his second of the game and in a stunning ten minute spell Sports were level - phew! Hucknall sensed victory and great work by Gibson-Brown split the Vernon defence only to see the ball narrowly evade Hucknall's on-rushing forward line. In a thrilling end to the match more chances were created and all credit to Vernon's man-mountain goalie for keeping out a late effort from Hallam to keep the scores level.
Full time: Vernon Colts 4 Hucknall Sports 4
You would think that coming back from 4-1 down with 20 minutes remaining to snatch a draw would be cause for celebration but Sports management and supporters couldn't help feeling that this was a missed opportunity.
Football is a simple game, but today Hucknall contrived to make life very difficult for themselves by forgetting the basics.
The Man of the Match award went to Jacob Barlow for showing that one Sports player at least took the lessons learnt on the training ground onto the pitch - Brilliant display of wing-play Jacob and many congratulations.

Evans inspires Sports to the Semi's
22/01/11 Saturday U12's Cup Underwood Villa 0 Hucknall Sports 3 Frosty conditions meant that this game was delayed by an hour as the venue was moved from Brinsley to Bestwood Village (Goosedale) and with both teams enduring a frustrating league campaign it was a chance to relax in this Cup Quarter-final match. The only change for Sports saw them rearrange their defensive line-up and deploy Dante Diriso at left-back in place of the holidaying Tom Eastwood. From the start it was clear that Sports had brought their confidence of the previous weeks with them and got the perfect start when Jacob Barlow bicycle-kicked his team into the lead when he latched onto a ball just inside the 6-yard box. Charlie Blatherwick's intelligent use of the ball saw him cutting the Villa defence apart with a great range of passes from his new position at the head of midfield and one such pass saw James Hallam's blistering run and shot narrowly miss the target at the far post. In defence Diriso showed his versatility by being able to both break-up play with great tackles and also setup attacks by driving his team forward. Villa did have a good spell of pressure midway through the half and might have punished Sports defence had it not been for Keeper Kal Orton who was alert to any dangers and quick off the mark. Sports finished the half pushing to extend the lead but had to settle for 1-0 as the whistle blew. Half Time: Underwood Villa 0 Hucknall Sports 1 For the second half Sports switched Ellis (Welsh Wizard) Evans into centre midfield where he made good use of the ball to release his team mates with a great range of passing. Buckly Gibson-Brown showed he had listened to the coaching instructions and proved a great threat on both the right and left wings. Evans vision set free Hallam who finished with the composure of someone twice his age to score after rounding the Underwood keeper. Centre-back Ryan Towle launched a thunderbolt strike from 30 yards after Villa cleared the ball from a corner but his shot narrowly missed the far post by inches. Then Towle started a 10-pass move which resulted in Oliver Bowley 'megging' the Villa defender with a weighted pass to setup Ellis Evans to round of his Man of the Match performance with a shot high into the top corner - the Sports fans went wild with appreciation and even drew applause from the neutrals for the skill of the football. Soon after the final whistle blew for a victory that saw Sports make the semi-final's of the Saturday U12 Cup and a home game against West Bridgford. Full Time: Underwood Villa 0 Hucknall Sports 3 There are so many good things to say about this performance, but the summary has to be that it was a great team performance. Strong when we needed to be strong and skilful also when creating a series of great moves. This set of boys have worked so hard get their season going and finally have started go see some rewards. Let's kick on now and take this type of performance into the League games. Man of the Match was almost impossible to chose today with great performances all around the pitch. Joe Newton was great in defence (again), Mitch Davies was awesome in midfield (again) and James Hallam a constant threat up front (again). However, for his terrific passing and wonderful goal the award goes to Ellis Evans - Well done Ell, great performance.

Tough start to the new year for Sports
